Post 221--Trudeau: An Emerging Secular Dictator

I promised you yesterday that I would continue with the topic of secularism trying to impose, force, its will on the rest of us. Even secular writers and media have joined the chorus of objections about Trudeau's hierarchy of rights that places, well, forces actually, pro-abortion and women's rights at the top of the pile, regardless of the negative impact on other rights that our legal system considers equal.  

The specific issue at stake here is Trudeau's withholding long-standing grants to the Canada Summer Jobs programme. Any organization that does not accept his views on abortion and on women's rights will no longer accept grants under that programme. The women's rights referred to here are their right to abort or not, long a volatile issue in Canadian politics and culture that even a conservative Prime Minister like Steven Harper did not dare touch.

Trudeau's Troubling Insistence That Charities Pick A Side On Abortion

One of the differences between a free society and a repressive regime is the right to remain silent.

A law that requires Canadians to say "please" and "thank you" would be a bad law.

Not because these are bad words, but because in a free country, nobody should be compelled to say anything. One of the differences between a free society and a repressive regime is the right to remain silent.

In medieval England, King Henry VIII passed a law requiring all to declare their support for him (and not the pope) as the head of the Church of England. Thomas More had his head chopped off in 1535, merely for remaining silent and for refusing to say that the king was the supreme head of the church. So insecure and thin-skinned was Henry VIII that he could not stand Thomas More's silence.

And so it is with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his belief that abortion should be legal during all nine months of pregnancy.

That is the state of the law in Canada today. It has been so since 1988, when the Supreme Court of Canada (R. v. Morgentaler) invited Parliament to pass new legislation to provide at least some protection to the unborn, particularly during the latter stages of pregnancy. Parliament has not done so.

For our post-modernist prime minister, the silence of Canadians on the subject of abortion is not good enough. Like Henry VIII, Trudeau needs to hear his people say that they agree with him.

Starting this year, charities must state that they support abortion being legal if they wish to access a grant through the Canada Summer Jobs program, which provides federal government grants to non-profits and to businesses, to hire a summer student. Charities must further state that abortion is a Charter right, in spite of the fact that Parliament can legislate to protect unborn life.

This means that the Mustard Seed, which helps tens of thousands of Alberta's poor, homeless and addicted, regardless of the client's faith, creed or colour, will hire fewer students. Its CEO Stephen Wile stated:

"The Mustard Seed doesn't take a position on abortion, but with the government making this a requirement for funding, it's trying to force us from a neutral position to an affirmative position on abortion, and we're not prepared to do that. ... We're not willing to support the government's position in order to get the funds; it's just not worth it for us."

In response to a public outcry, Trudeau and his Labour Minister Patricia Hajdu have declared that this new attestation only applies to pro-life groups, not to charities who might happen to adhere to pro-life beliefs. As Trudeau put it: "Of course, you're more than allowed to have whatever beliefs you like." As Hajdu explained: "This is about the activities of the organization and the job description. ... This is not about beliefs or values."

These assurances have now proven to be utterly false.

Since the Feb. 9, 2018 deadline for applying for Canada Summer Jobs funding, numerous charities have been told, in writing, that they will not receive funding unless they check off the "I attest" box on the application, to confirm their support for legal abortion as a Charter right.

"It seems," stated Mustard Seed CEO Wile, "like the government is saying, 'The issue of where you stand on abortion is more important than the work you do and the people you serve,' and that's really sad. At the core of who we are, we're really against fear and hate, and unfortunately, the government is taking a position that instead of decelerating division, it's accelerating it."

Losing several thousand dollars of government funding is nothing compared to losing your head. But the underlying issue of government-compelled speech should not be dismissed lightly.

Pro-choicers should be just as worried about this policy as pro-lifers.

Even if a charity shared Trudeau's opinions about abortion, it would still violate freedom of expression to be compelled to state one's belief about abortion as a condition for accessing a government program that one is otherwise entitled to access.

How is this Canada Summer Jobs attestation different from requiring seniors to agree with Trudeau's beliefs in order to receive their pension cheques? If some seniors spend their days doing volunteer work for pro-life groups, should their pension benefits be cut off, for disagreeing with the prime minister?

If Trudeau can get away with this, what stops a future prime minister from compelling Canadians to express support for his — or her — beliefs, as a condition of accessing a government program or benefit?

Christians who take the Bible seriously--and that definitely does not include all who call themselves by that name!--take life seriously at all ends of the stick: before birth, at birth and from there all the way to old age.  Life is ours to receive, not to take.  That's God's prerogative.  That is the principle held by them since the dawn of the Way. 

Unfortunately, in our secular age of liberalism and most other kinds of -isms, life is under threat. Governments and medicals in the Western world are all ganging up on the vulnerable. We've had abortion for a long time. Then came assisted suicide for the aged and sick. And now we've arrived at children. It just goes on and on and on.... The holocaust was a horrendous attack on human life. The Soviets and Chinese have had their horrible bashes. We in the West have outdone them all with our abortion where year upon year millions are aborted in country after country. But it still isn't good enough. Now we're after living children.

Canada legalized euthanasia and assisted suicide (known as MAiD - so-called “medical assistance in dying”) on June 17, 2016. The law requires persons to be at least 18 years old and have a condition where “natural death is reasonably foreseeable.”

Soon after legalization, the Canadian government announced that the Council of Canadian Academies would examine extending euthanasia to children, people who are incompetent but have made an advanced request, and people with mental illness.

Last October, the Canadian Paediatric Society published a study examining euthanasia for teens, young children, and newborns. This study seemed designed to open the door to euthanasia for children.

Now the Biennial Provincial Symposium on Paediatric Palliative Care (at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto on April 25) will feature a break-out session titled: “Developing a policy on Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) for Paediatric Patients” followed by wine and cheese.

Has the Council of Canadian Academies already decided to extend euthanasia to paediatric patients? Has the Canadian Paediatric Society decided that euthanasia will be extended to children and newborns, using this Symposium to develop a policy for when the killing begins?

Why are they so interested in euthanasia for children? Children can’t choose and their autonomy is questionable.

This is not about a “slippery slope” but rather an incredibly fast incremental extension of euthanasia. The law is not concerned with choice and autonomy but the rules that the doctor should follow before performing the act. Whether it is incompetent or competent people, or children, lethal injection is what it is and the decision is made by the doctor. Choice and autonomy are only slogans for selling the act.

We oppose euthanasia for children!

Our secular culture is playing around with death more and more as if it has the authority to make life-end decisions.  Civilized people know that life is not ours to give or take. It is only barbarians who feel free to play around with life and death as if it is theirs to give or take. We've experienced this barbarian attitude for decades in connection with abortion. Long ago, it was predicted that once we're over the abortion hurdle then we'll take the next step, killing the other weak vulnerables among us, that is, the elderly and others.  Those in palliative and hospices were the natural next target. 

And, sure enough, it has come.  At first preferred, even if illegal.  Then, after some time of force and illegalities, it became legal over the dead bodies of many Christians--pardon the intended pun! And now the next step: force it on the institutions of care regardless of their values, worldview or religion. 

It has been public knowledge that the progress of the West is due to its traditional Christian worldview--along with the help of humanism, which itself is just a product of Christianity. It has also been predicted that to the extent the West forsakes its Christian tradition, to the extent it will revert back to its pagan past.  The issues of abortion and euthanasia are the direct result of this reversion process. 

The notice below is reaching you too late, I'm afraid. I saw it just now, five minutes ago. Nevertheless I pass it on so you can become more familiar, more shocked and more involved in stopping this slide into barbarianism.  It's coming; have no doubt.  It's just dressed in the impressive dress of modern science that hides the true horror it is.

Fraser Health is now forcing non-denominational palliative care providers and hospices to offer euthanasia. That means that organizations devoted to caring are now being instructed to assist withsuicide. Many of our readers will be familiar with Dr. Neil Hilliard, the medical director of Fraser Health’s palliative care program, who was featured in ARPA’s palliative care documentary. In light of this decision, Dr. Hilliard has resigned from his position.

Although this decision comes from Fraser Health, the developments are not limited to the Fraser Valley. News reports indicate that at least two other regions in the province are placing similar expectations on the palliative care providers.

In light of these developments, Langley ARPA is organizing an event, to be held on Saturday. More information is in their update below. We strongly encourage you to attend and bring this event to the attention of others!

With just a couple of days to go, we are not able to advertise this broadly and need your assistance. Please email and phone your friends and family, and especially those who you know are connected to care-giving or would have an interest in this. This Saturday the Langley ARPA chapter will be hosting a number of speakers including MP Mark Warawa, MLA Mary Polack, Langley Hospice Executive Director Nancy Panchuk, and former Medical Director of the Fraser Health Palliative Care Program Dr. Neil Hilliard to discuss the sudden mandate by Fraser Health requiring all Fraser Valley Hospice to provide euthanasia as part of hospice palliative care programs.

Many Hospice medical professionals, volunteers, and donors are absolutely opposed to this directive and are pushing back. Delta Hospice Executive Director Nancy Macey recently told the Vancouver Sun, "the pressure to provide MAiD everywhere is a bullying tactic of the Dying With Dignity activists." Dr. Hilliard stated in his resignation letter that "providing euthanasia or physician-assisted suicide is not in accordance with palliative care (which) "affirms life and regards dying as a normal process...". MP Mark Warawa recently submitted a letter to the Fraser Health Board saying that "requiring hospice palliative care facilities to hasten the death of a patient through the use of assisted suicide and euthanasia directly contradicts this recognized mandate and social licence of hospice facilities, healthcare professionals and volunteers that are supported and funded by generous donors in our communities."

Post 199--Sexless Marriage Experiment

Jim Denison once again shared an "interesting" story with us today that I am passing on to you. I put "interesting" in quotation marks, for when you think it through it is a pretty sad story and a pretty devastating picture of North American culture.  All bets are off; anything, and I mean anything or, more accurately, everything goes in terms of what Christians call "creation order," a term that includes marriage. 

 Jim published it under the title:

Tiffany Trump's friends enter an                            "unconventional" marriage

Quentin Esme Brown is a well-known socialite, formerly from New York City but now living in Los Angeles. Peter Cary Peterson was once featured in a show about wealthy teenagers living in Manhattan. The two have been close friends since they were kids. Last weekend, they were married in Las Vegas. The event made national headlines because Tiffany Trump was a flower girl. Is this a case of two friends who fell in love and got married out of romantic passion? Not at all. Yahoo reported: "Tiffany Trump's friends just entered a sexless marriage, which isn't a terrible idea." Esme called her marriage "unconventional" and explained: "Peter and I are not romantically involved—in fact we are still dating others and will continue to seek love in all its forms—we are just each other's hearts and wish to begin our journey towards evolution, because the more we face reality, the more we can see that there is no right or wrong." A licensed therapist affirmed their decision: "We don't need to get married for any of the reasons we used to. Once you've got everything else in place, it is like the cherry on top." Another psychologist explained: "A lot of these sorts of marriages are in response to society getting increasingly isolated, and people want to create a kinship model." Brown's response to her wedding is the mantra of our age: "We have one life. Free yourself!" "Keep moving forward with God's strength and guidance" God created marriage as a covenant between a man and a woman built on unconditional love (Genesis 2:18–24; Ephesians 5:21–33). When he gave the first man and woman to each other, he told them to "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" (Genesis 1:28). However, our culture's definition of marriage has obviously departed drastically from God's design in recent years. Prior to Roe v. Wade, unborn children were protected by law; Americans now abort more than 650,000 babies each year. We once valued the sanctity of life until natural death; today, 73 percent of Americans support legalized euthanasia. This percentage has more than doubled since 1951. The news is not all negative by any means. As Janet Denison noted in her latest blog, Christians can still influence society in significant ways. The continuing response to Target's dressing room policy illustrates the power of Christians who coalesce around a moral issue. The popularity of Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby show that companies can take strong Christian stands in our culture. But as Janet noted, there is also much work to be done, so we must "keep moving forward with God's strength and guidance." To that end, consider a biblical event that serves as a parable for cultural engagement today. A brick in one hand and a sword in the other Nehemiah 4 finds the people of Israel at work rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem. In a day without national armies or police forces, a city's walls were essential to its security. Without such walls, Jerusalem could not be repopulated. However, the project faced enormous opposition from Israel's enemies who understood the strategic significance of this construction project. As a result, half of the people worked on the wall, while half "held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail" (v. 16). In addition, "Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other" (v. 17). This metaphor seems powerful to me: rebuilding the nation with a brick in one hand and a sword in the other. We are to work for the best while preparing for the worst. If you're traveling by air and worried about the flu, you should pray for God's protection. But you should also clean common surfaces on the airplane and avoid crowds wherever you can. If you're a parent, you should pray for your children to be protected from the devastation of pornography. But you should also use resources such as Covenant Eyes to provide real-time accountability and other support. If you're concerned about the moral direction of our culture, you should pray for spiritual awakening each day. But you should also look for ways to impact the lives you touch today. "He did what he could" On Wednesday, a drone flew to two distressed swimmers off the coast of Australia and dropped a self-inflating rescue pod into the water, saving their lives. Scientists have now developed a blood test that can detect early signs of eight kinds of cancer. But neither the drone nor the blood test can help people unless they are taken to those who need them. A brick in one hand and a sword in the other is an image for rebuilding the spiritual walls of our culture. We should be positive and proactive in sharing God's love with our world (Matthew 22:39). But we should also be ready to "contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints" (Jude 3). Know that God has given you all you need to fulfill your Kingdom assignment. Your brick is the right size for the wall you are called to build. Your sword is sharp enough for the battle you are called to wage. In Bread for the Journey, Henri Nouwen notes: "We are good enough to do what we are called to do."

Post 179--Faith vs Reason?

Trying to catch up a bit after the long absence. So, another gem for you to ponder today, this time mostly my own.

Today’s subject is hardly new for me or, for that matter, for you. You’ve read similar stuff in earlier posts on this blog, but I return to the subject for two related reasons. One is that secular folks seem never to understand the point I am making today. Even secular friends with whom I’ve had long and deep discussions on this particular issue never seem to comprehend. I’ve been wondering whether this is simply because they cannot or because simply refuse to admit. The second and related reason for returning to the subject is that, because of what seems intransigence on the part of seculars, it has become one of my favourite subjects. I love to challenge seculars on this score, because their view on the subject is the dominant one in our secular society. Our whole society is run on basis of it. That is to say, our whole society is run on basis of a myth!

The subject?  The old saw of REASON VS RELIGION.  Now, you may not be philosophically inclined and kind of crinch at the sound of this topic. But, you know, whether you’re philosophical or not, your life is lived according to the stand you take on this subject. Your stand may be held subconsciously; you may not be aware of it, but it shapes your life.  And the fact that it most likely is subconscious, that makes it worse. In fact, it means you don’t know what you’re doing or why.

John Krakauer published a book back in 2004 by the title of Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith. It’s a book about violence within the Mormon community.  He used this story as a demonstration of his conviction about reason vs religion. In his Prologue he wrote:

Although the far territory of the extreme can exert an intoxicating pull on susceptible individuals of all bents, extremism seems to be especially prevalent among those include by temperament or upbringing towards religious pursuits.  Faith is the very antithesis of reason, injudiciousness a crucial component of spiritual devotion.  And when religious fanaticism supplants ratiocination, all bets are suddenly off. Anything can happen. Absolutely anything. Common sense is no match for the peace of God—as the actions of Dan Lafferty vividly attest.

There you have it: “Faith is the very antithesis of reason,” while “injudiciousness” is “a crucial component of spiritual devotion.” Well, I am a man of faith and of spiritual devotion, but none the people here in Vancouver’s West End who know me and have observed me have ever accused me of injudiciousness or of being unreasonable—except two.  And this West End, in case you don’t know area, is thoroughly secular in its culture and mentality. Secularism is the very air we breathe here.

Now I don’t know anything about Krakauer’s life, but I suspect he is pretty ignorant about the role of religion, that he has never spent much time with religious people or in religious institutions. He has never read serious religious books or listened to lectures, including dialogical ones.  If he has religious neighbours or colleagues, he avoids talking about it and, perhaps, avoids them altogether.

But, you know what the real and even more tragic problem is? It is that Krakauer does not even know himself!  He, like seculars in general, thinks that he is a person of reason and not of faith—but that is the grand myth of secularism. Who has ever proven that the philosophy that puts reason at the top is true?  Has been proven?  No one. That itself is a matter of pure faith.  A person living by reason is one living by faith in reason, believes as much and as fervently as the overtly religious person.  And indeed, with the fanaticism of secular believers in reason, all bets can indeed be off, such as the killing of the most vulnerable of all humans, namely babies. That’s the ultimate of extremes and of cruelty. Society’s having become accustomed to it does not make it less extreme or cruel.  And if extreme behavior is the product of religion, well Krakauer has just condemned his own faith in reason.

 I’ll try to get back to Krakauer and similar people over the next few days. In the meantime, ponder where you fit in this faith vs reason thing.

Well, stick that in your pipe and smoke it.   

Post 150--The 149 Story Continued

The time between this and the previous post is a lot longer than intended. This time it is not an excuse such as being too busy or traveling. The problem was a technical one with this blog as a whole that I, try as I may, was not able to overcome. I needed a techie to get back on the road. I did find a techie soon enough, but he was not able to come until just two days ago. So, I'm back.  Please welcome me!

The material in this post was supposed to have been placed only one day after no. 149. It was actually written that day. Thus it reads that way as well. It is the next day's development of the March for Life. 

It is time I make something clear. This post along with 149 may give you the impression that I am a conservative and a supporter of Trump and his ilk. People assume that a pro-lifer must be conservative, right?  The same if you say something positive about Trump.  When on top of all that you include a negative reference to liberals, well, then you've clinched it: you're a true blue conservative.  

Well, I'm not. But neither am I a liberal. I am a Christian with a different frame of reference. I support some conservative issues as well as some liberal ones. I disagree with many conservative issues as well as many liberal ones. Being associated with conservatism embarrasses me to no end as a Christian, for conservatism embraces so many causes I could not possibly support. Same for liberalism. This is the reason it may seem that I sometimes jump the fence between the two sides. I am neither; I have my own "side."  So, I don't jump fences! It's almost like "A plague on both of you," but Christians don't wish a plague on anyone. Hence, I won't go there. 

Alright, having made that clear--at least, I hope I have!--let's get back to the topic of 149.  In the next post I will move on again.

If there's one thing I took away from yesterday's March for Life, it's that the hundreds of thousands of young people who showed up are ready and willing to get to work to abolish abortion.

You and I already know that this generation of young people is the Pro-Life Generation. In fact, polls show that a majority of Millennials support severely restricting or banning abortion!

But despite the media's narrative that young people are lazy and just want to be coddled, the more than 1,800 young people that showed up ready to get to work at today's SFLA East Coast National Conference (and the 500 more that showed up last Sunday at our West Coast National Conference) have proven that narrative couldn't be more wrong!  

These young women and men are determined to win the battles ahead of us in the next few weeks: to defund Planned Parenthood, confirm a pro-life U.S. Supreme Court Justice, and abolish abortion in our lifetime.

I'm so grateful for the support we have received from you to be able to put on the nation's largest pro-life conference.

We're providing so many valuable resources for these young people to go out and make a pro-life impact in their community, and we couldn't have done it without your support.

Today, students are learning the best messaging to reach their peers on the life issue.  They're learning what rights they have -- this is critical as we see more and more high school and college campuses cracking down on "free speech" (i.e. everyone who has a different opinion than the left-wing college administrators).

Students at our national conference are also learning how to help women in crisis by working with their local pregnancy center and taking part in SFLA's Pregnant on Campus Initiative.

Post 149--Ready to Defund Planned Parenthood?

The letter below just arrived on my screen and I decided I would share it with all of you immediately.  I know the organization is American, not Canadian, but the issue it talks about is international in that we are talking about trying to stop the wholesale murder of the most vulnerable of all human beings, namely babies. The euphemism is, of course, abortion, one of the most barbaric practices of the West. The 

people who are fighting this battle feel that this a most opportune moment to strike a blow at that practice and kill it instead of babies. So, here it is, email address and all.
